Sonnets for the queen of heaven

In this sequel to the critically acclaimed Sonnets for Christ the King, the foremost lyric poet of our times explores the mysteries of the Blessed Virgin Mary in verses reminiscent of the great English masters. MacKenzie’s Mariological tour de force opens with a sequence featuring one sonnet for every title of Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto. A second set consists of lyrical meditations on Mary’s role in the mystery of the Incarnation. The dramatic climax is a jewel-like corona of sonnets honoring the Queen of Heaven in her rarely explored relation to the Seven Sacraments.

Approved by traditional Catholic clergy for devotional use and literary study in colleges and schools.

I

Benedictum Nomen Mariae

Her name is like the rain-perfumèd air
Of summer on a lost and winsome day:
I breathe it and am free of every care,
I say it and want nothing more to say.

Her name is laden like the honeycomb
Whose sweetness penetrates the yielding depth
Of all my soul, and, like the thought of home,
To think on her consoles and eases breath.

Her tender comforts lift the weight of sin,
And just as wax doth melt before the flame,
Or as a frown dissolves into a grin,
All darkness flees before her holy name.

Maria! Be thy name at life’s eclipse
The final sound that leaves my dying lips.

Beautifully Crafted English Sonnets

Verses Composed in the Grand Manner

According to statistics, you have been boycotting academic so-called “poetry” for the past 60 years. Why? Because “modern poetry” is a scam and everyone knows it. You also know that narcissistic navel-gazing in chopped-up prose has nothing to do with authentic lyric verse. You deserve better. You deserve poetry that is meaningful, beautiful, and true.

About the author

Winner of the 2020 Society of Classical Poets Competition and the only American ever to win the Scottish International Open Poetry Competition, MacKenzie has studied the history of the sonnet in five languages. With his M.A. in French Studies and a minor in Italian, MacKenzie's philological approach to English gives his verses a timeless quality readers love.

In 1997, MacKenzie completed his Ph.D. program at the University of New Mexico but was denied his doctorate. When the poet returned from teaching and researching in Paris, he found that his dissertation directress, Claude-Marie Senninger (of the University of Paris, La Sorbonne), had been forced out of her own department by a newly hired group of Marxist "critical theorists." These demanded MacKenzie remove the word "Christ" from his dissertation, as well as any mention of Catholics deported during the Nazi occupation, on pain of forfeiting the Ph.D. he had effectively earned. MacKenzie refused.

Subsequently entering the religious life, MacKenzie went on to study traditional Catholic theology in France, Switzerland, Italy, and the United States. After his ordination to the Minor Orders of Porter, Lector, Acolyte, and Exorcist, he left the clerical state and later met and married the beautiful Lady of the Sonnets who inspires his popular love poetry.

"The divine purpose of poetry is the glory of God and conversion of souls."               —Joseph Charles MacKenzie

   A literary act of reparation

MacKenzie wrote Sonnets for the Queen of Heaven in reparation for blasphemies committed throughout the world against Mary’s Immaculate Conception, her Immaculate Heart, her perpetual virginity, and her special role as Co-Redemptrix of humankind. Offer your purchase in reparation for these horrible sins and restore poetry to its proper purpose, the glory of God and conversion of souls.

Melania and the Queen of Heaven

The First Lady of the greatest nation on earth recognizes heaven’s First Lady as her Queen. Through devotion to Mary, Melania continues to grow in faith and wisdom.

Following Mrs. Trump’s unassuming example, Catholics in ever growing numbers are taking their rightful place in our nation’s public life. If there was ever a book to jump-start the rebirth of traditional Catholic culture at this historic time, it is MacKenzie’s Sonnets for the Queen of Heaven. Through this collection of Mariological masterpieces by the Winner of the 2020 Society of Classical Poets Competition, readers can deepen their devotion to Heaven’s Gracious Queen.

“The idea that Catholic poetry ended with Chesterton is as harmful to faith as any other error of modernism.”
